Never say the Blue Devils and the Tar Heels can’t work together. The two universities have just announced the launch of a collaborative, first-of-its-kind program created by some pretty awesome medical and business school students. It’s called MedServe, and it’s geared toward seeding rural and underserved areas of North Carolina with sorely-needed new doctors.
The program pairs recent outstanding college grads (read: future doctors) with underserved clinics, much the same way Teach for America pairs grads with underserved schools. The goal is to improve the clinics’ service, and also to give these potential healthcare providers exposure to rural regions, improving the chances that they’ll come back and work there.
A healthier community means a decreased burden on the healthcare system. Less stress on the system means lower costs. We say amen.
