The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue—prescription drug addiction.

According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs. A majority of the abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day—held this year on April 28, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—provides a safe, convenient and anonymous means of disposing of unwanted, unused or expired prescription drugs. It also aims to educate the general public about the potential for abuse and medications.

Collection sites include pharmacies, drug stores, churches, police precincts and more. To find a donation site in your area, visit takebackday.dea.gov.
