Archaeologists near Manteo have made a discovery that may relate to the Lost Colony, the late 16th century settlement on what is now Roanoke Island.
The entire colony disappeared without a trace between 1587 and 1590. Their fate is one of the great mysteries of our state, and even small clues about the colonists’ lives are treasure troves. The current discovery — two clay pottery fragments — points to their healthcare practices, of all things; the fragments are likely from jars that held medicines.
