So this one’s a bit complicated, but follow us:

Until a few weeks ago, NC State had a rule that required campus groups to apply for a permit before passing out flyers or other literature.

In a precedent-setting move, they’ve just tossed it out...which means we may be looking at a free-speech reform on campuses across the state.

The religious group Grace Christian Life was suing the school because State had blocked them from distributing flyers on campus. The school claimed they didn’t have the right permits; GCL says they did. The point is moot now, because State has scrapped the rule, essentially conceding that handing out literature is an expression of free speech.

Lt. Governor Dan Forest agrees. He’s put in a legislative proposal that seeks to identify and banish similar rules at other schools.
