So the U.S. Department of Agriculture awards loan guarantees for renewable energy projects across the nation — and this year, our state racked up. Seven North Carolina projects earned more than half of the $43 million total allocated nationally to these projects.
Since 2009, the USDA’s program has “reduce[d] greenhouse gas emissions by more than five million metric tons annually." More sun, less greenhouse gas? Sounds good for our health, and our economy: many of these loans go to small businesses and farms.
